Warm weather is upon us and if you're looking to sell, it's a great time to put your house on the market. You’ll want to do what you can to improve the look of your property before listing. If you’re not selling, it's still the perfect time to give your home’s exterior a face lift for your own pleasure. We have some tips and tricks that are sure to make your house the knockout of the neighborhood. Some of these will even work on a rental.

1. Up your landscaping game.

Check your local Southeastern Salvage or Home Emporium for mulch, garden soil, landscaping rocks, and more.

Your yard is one of the first things that visitors will see. Tidy up your shrubs. If you don’t have established perennials, you can quickly dress up your garden by planting annuals. Most of our stores get new shipments of seasonal plants each spring. If your topsoil isn’t the best, you can till and mix it with bagged garden soil. Define your beds with landscaping rocks and top them off with mulch for a manicured look.

2. No garden? No problem!

We carry pottery and planters in all sizes.

Container gardens are easy to put together and easy to maintain. Choose planters that complement your home’s aesthetic and create layers of differing heights, colors, and textures. You can even use this approach to make a kitchen garden with your favorite herbs.

3. Update your entry doors.

Our doors are ready to stain or paint.

You’ll be surprised by what a difference a new door makes. Consider the style of your home when selecting a door and choose one that matches its mood. Our Prehung Steel and Fiberglass Doors are a cost-effective option for any home. We also carry Mahogany and Meranti Unfinished Slab Doors with and without glass in single and double door styles. If a new door isn’t in your budget, you can paint or strip and stain your old one for an instant refresh. While you’re at it, change out your old hardware. We recommend a new door handle and house numbers.

4. Clean, clean, clean.

If you don’t have a pressure washer, you can rent one from most hardware stores. Make a checklist that includes your siding, driveway and walkways, gutters, fences, and any other surfaces that have picked up dirt over the years. Sweep away cobwebs, scrub down your mailbox, wipe your windows, and clean your patio furniture. The results will be worth the effort.

5. Spruce up the front porch.

We have Monogrammed Coir Doormats starting at $9 and Novelty Coir Doormats starting at $15.

Now that everything is clean, consider the purpose of your porch. Do you want to spend more time on it? Do you want to impress visitors or potential buyers? Throw out the old, dirty doormat and replace it with a new one. If you liked our container garden idea, add symmetry with a matching pair of porch planters or hanging baskets. You can add your own touch with other décor, but keep things clean and uncluttered.

6. Don't forget the patio.

Our Patio Umbrellas start at just $29 and you'll find a nice variety of patio furniture at our stores.

If you have a patio or a similar outdoor space, this one’s for you. You want this area to feel inviting. If you don’t already have seating, you’ll want to choose pieces that are comfortable and attractive. Patio umbrellas will increase your space’s functionality in the summer months. Decorate with plants or add a fire pit to enjoy in the evenings.
